British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has touted Britain as a global leader in AI regulation, and the government wants to accelerate investment in AI to improve productivity. Tech expert Matt Clifford and former senior diplomat Jonathan Black have been appointed to lead preparations for the summit. The summit will take place on Nov. 1 and 2 at Bletchley Park, the site in Milton Keynes where mathematician Alan Turing cracked Nazi Germany's Enigma code, the government said on Thursday. "The UK has long been home to the transformative technologies of the future, so there is no better place to host the first ever global AI safety summit than at Bletchley Park," Sunak said. Governments around the world are wrestling with how to control the potential negative consequences of AI without stifling innovation.

☆ British water companies face $1 bln lawsuits over pollution - law firm

Environmental and water consultant Carolyn Roberts, who plans to bring the claims, says water companies would have faced penalties if they had properly reported pollution incidents. The firm said it will also be filing cases against five other companies – Thames Water, United Utilities, Anglian Water, Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water – in the coming months. Water companies have pushed back against the proposed claims, describing them as "highly speculative". A Thames Water spokesperson said the company was aware of the potential claim, which they said was without merit. Water companies have avoided being penalised by regulator Ofwat for "serial and serious under-reporting" of pollution incidents, she said in a statement.

Barnaby Webber and Grace Kumar, both 19-year-old students at the University of Nottingham, and Ian Coates, 65, a school janitor, were fatally stabbed. Coates was later found dead from knife injuries on Magdala Road by a member of the public, police said. CNN —Three people were found dead in the central English city of Nottingham on Tuesday, in what police described as a major incident. Police were first alerted to an incident on Ilkeston Road near the city center early Tuesday local time, where two people were found dead. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”Authorities reacted to the “horrific and tragic” incident on Tuesday. “This is an horrific and tragic incident which has claimed the lives of three people,” said Chief Constable Kate Meynell. CNN —Cristiano Ronaldo has come under a lot of criticism this season and he’s clearly been listening. On Sunday, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner snubbed former teammate Gary Neville ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League match against West Ham following recent criticism from the television pundit. Neville had criticized Ronaldo’s “unacceptable” behavior in United’s recent league victory over Tottenham Hotspur where the 37-year-old appeared to refuse to come on as substitute before leaving the game early. Neville is not the first pundit to receive the cold shoulder from Ronaldo, who has found himself in and out of the United team this season. Ronaldo has not had a great season for United but could turn around his year with Portugal at the World Cup starting this month.
